River restoration

Alaska specialise in delivering river restoration projects across the UK within sensitive areas of national and international designation for their nature conservation interest. Our experience of river restoration varies from small ephemeral streams to major rivers, and in type from the high energy upland rivers down to lugubrious lowland meanders.

Our projects have varied from ‘conventional’ restoration techniques such as removing steel piles and excavating meanders, others have involved more specialist equipment or innovation to tackle the constraints encountered when working in a delicate environment.

We undertake almost all elements of mechanised river restoration, but the most common are;
-Floodplain reconnection
-Re-meandering
-Introduction of in-channel features such as berms, or pool and riffle sequences to encourage ecological diversity
-Creating ‘debris dams’ using large woody material (LWM)
-Removal of hard engineering structures
-Fish passage improvements

Our awareness and ability to deliver consistently high quality restoration schemes comes from thirty years of river restoration experience. We pride ourselves on being innovative problem solvers, adding value to projects through our combined team knowledge.
