Batemag P100 4wd walking excavator

Batemag is one of several manufacturers around the Alps making walking excavators primarily for steep ground. The individual legs make it possible to level the excavator, even on steep slopes, and stability is derived from the ‘spider’ legs, rather than undercarriage mass. Thus the P100 which weighs 12 tonnes has the same engine and hydraulic pumps as a conventional 21 tonne tracked slew.

We purchased the walking excavator specifically for the ability to ‘jump’ obstacles; in this case getting in and out of a brook without disturbing water vole burrows in the banks (protected by law).

The P100 has an extending dipper, giving a maximum reach of 8.2 metres, but it is worth remembering that because it achieves stability by using the legs as outriggers, that the maximum reach from a hard edge will be less for maximum lift.

With the legs tucked in it is possible to work in up to 2 metres of water, but only if the substrate is known to be good, or the water is clear enough for the operator to see clearly what he is driving into. For deep waters we also have fully amphibious excavators

This P100 normally carries an Engcon tilt rotator (which can be removed), with quick release. It is shown in this picture with a riddling bucket removing fines from spawning beds in the River Derwent. For work on steep slopes (where the arm is used to assist in climbing) reinforced attachments are used, including a 1200 mm bucket (front page), grab (above), and flail mower. In the Alpine situation minimum width is critical and all walking excavators are designed to fold in to 2.1 m width; though with the low ground pressure 710mm tyres fitted for our work we are 2.5 m wide
